Weekly Menu: Super Bowl Party Food


One of the things we strive for when planning our menus is making everything fit together into one nice, neat little package. We look to use ingredients in different ways throughout the week so that we’re benefiting from the ability of do-aheads and being able to buy in bulk. We also benefit from a well-stocked pantry.

With the Super Bowl only a week away, it’s time to start planning your menu, if you haven’t already. This one is inspired by Ole’s grad school advisor’s annual Super Bowl party. A few varieties of chili to please the masses, baked potatoes and all the fixings, appetizers, dips, finger foods and plenty of hand-held desserts.

It is one of my favorite Super Bowl menu ideas. Warm chili and baked potatoes go so well together, plus they have similar toppings, or you can always top your baked potato with the chili. They’re also easy to make ahead of time so you aren’t rushing around trying to pull it all together the day of.

The Preparation Shortcuts:

1. Make the chili ahead of time and heat in the crock pot just before serving.
2. Most desserts can also be made ahead of time and stored until ready to consume.
3. Baked chicken wings can hog a lot of oven space. I suggest starting them early and moving them to crock pots or roasters to keep them warm
4. Have friends bring appetizers and desserts to take some of the pressure off. Chances are they’ll ask what they can bring before you ever mention it.
