5-6 large apples
1 lemon, juiced
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cardamom
Topping:
1 stick butter, softened
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup flour or almond meal
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cardamom
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
pinch of salt
Preheat your oven to 350° F. Start with the apples. Peel them all and slice them thinly, placing them in a large bowl. Squeeze the lemon juice over them and toss to prevent browning. Then add the granulated sugar, 1/4 cup flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon cardamom and mix it together well, evenly coating the apples. In a separate bowl mix together the butter, flour/almond meal, brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon cardamom, the ground ginger and a pinch of salt for good measure. Mash it all up until it’s sticky and clumpy.
Lightly grease the inside of a 2-quart baking dish with butter or cooking spray. Dump in your cinnamon apples. Pour on your topping mix and evenly cover the apples. Place in the oven and bake for 1 hour or until apples are nice and soft and top starts to turn more of a golden brown. Remove from oven and serve with your favorite brand of vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. Caramel sauce is not optional. It is essential.
Makes 8-10 servings.
