Bobby Flay Makes Sandwiches in NYC: A Giveaway!

Shaina · May 7, 2011 · 150 Comments

A few weeks ago I headed out to New York. I was there with Hellmann’s Club Sandwich to participate in a media event with Bobby Flay for the Build the Perfect Sandwich campaign. I had the chance to sit down with Bobby and ask a few questions, and he also signed his Burgers, Fries and Shakes cookbook for me to give away here on Food for My Family along with a 4-person picnic set!

Upon arriving in New York, of course the first thing I did was hook up with Amber from Bluebonnets and Brownies and cab it over to DessertTruck Works to meet up with Amanda of Kevin and Amanda and Maggy of Three Many Cooks to start our dessert tour. Goat cheese cheesecake with rosemary-honey caramel was on the menu, as were several macarons (my favorite was the salted caramel), these gorgeous brioche pillows filled with Nutella and vanilla creme. Amanda and I parted ways with Amber and Maggy and headed back to the hotel when we saw the Shake Shack on the corner. Of course we had to stop before we freshened up for dinner at Todd English’s Γ‡a Va.

I have to say that Amanda is the dessert touring queen. Her list of places to visit is a mile long. You can check out her full coverage of everything we ate in her Running Around NY post. This cone, held by the beautiful Maggy, is from the Wafles & Dinges truck, which only served to further solidify my love for speculoos, this time as speculoos spread. Speculoos are spice cookies from Belgium. If you fly Delta, they’re the cookies they pass out with the drinks. I may choose to fly Delta whenever possible based on this fact alone. I couldn’t rightly say. Bring on the cookies.

But the real reason I was in New York was to see Bobby demonstrate some of his favorite sandwiches. Bobby demonstrated his Turkey Reuben, Miami Cuban and his Muffuletta sandwiches for a group of media types. I was excited to meet up with Katja and Liz, and I had a ton of fun running into Matt, Audrey’s husband. Plus, I had the chance to sit down and ask Bobby a few questions of my own, most of which involved grilling for Ole.

Do you cook with your family, and how do you get your daughter involved?
[audio:https://foodformyfamily.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/bobbyflay1.mp3|titles=bobbyflay1]
What are your favorite things to grill, and what are you looking forward to as it warms up?
[audio:https://foodformyfamily.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/bobbyflay2.mp3|titles=bobbyflay2]
We have friends who don’t like traditional smoked barbecue. Do you have any ideas for something smoked that doesn’t have that traditional barbecue taste? This one is dedicated to Matt and Jen, who both just celebrated their birthdays. Happy birthday to you both!
[audio:https://foodformyfamily.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/bobbyflay3.mp3|titles=bobbyflay3]
Do you have a go-to family dinner?
[audio:https://foodformyfamily.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/bobbyflay4.mp3|titles=bobbyflay4]
This is the part where I tell you I’m not including the last question. That shall remain between me and Bobby. But really, it just wasn’t that inspired on my part.

My favorite sandwich is served at a restaurant where I grew up in Maine, called Big G’s.
It’s called a Sea Pig and it’s seafood salad with bacon and swiss. So amazing.

    Love Bobby Flay!

Favorite sandwich? Hmmm….probably a good pulled pork or the cuban sandwich from Sophie’s (in NYC).

Yes, NYC food is awesome. The Waffles and Dinges truck parks on our corner on the UWS every weekend. Do you know how hard it is to constantly walk by and smell that deliciousness all weekend?! My husband recently got the WMD (Waffles of Mass Deliciousness) and it was fantastic. Shake Shack is also an ultimate favorite and only 1 block from my house. I may be bragging a bit…sorry. But I am SO glad you enjoyed your food trip to NYC. When friends/family come to visit all the recommended food places are usually dessert. I think savory meals are more subjective to each individuals tastes, but the hot chocolate and MarieBelle’s is beyond awesome (even if crazy expensive) and no one, I know, can argue the ‘high’ you get when sipping that creamy deliciousness.

It’s hard to beat a good club sandwich – lightly toasted wheat bread, not much mayo, arugula instead of lettuce, and don’t skimp on the bacon! Love Mr Flay too.

My favorite sandwich of all time is a grilled cheese sandwich…and not even a fancy one – just good cheese and wheat bread brushed with olive oil and grilled. Of course if you want to throw bacon and tomato (maybe some avocado) on that sandwich, I won’t object πŸ™‚
