National Nutrition Month: Very Hungry Caterpillar Giveaway!

Shaina · March 20, 2011 · 118 Comments

I remember reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar to my sister when she was growing up, and it was one of the first books I purchased for my first child as well. There hasn’t been a moment in my kids’ lives where this book wasn’t front and center and at the top of the bedtime reading list. It is Magnus who is currently fascinated by its bright illustrations and the pictures of food.

For the very hungry caterpillars in my own home, it’s important for me to teach them how to eat healthy by presenting them with healthy meals and snack options. We’ve been covering some ways of how to get your children to experience and accept a wide variety of foods in the picky eater series, and reading is a fantastic way to drive home those points as well. Books like The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Green Eggs and Ham make this easy. Green Eggs and Ham shows us how trying new foods can lead to fun discoveries and open does for food. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, along with its counting and biology lessons, also illustrates how terrible you can feel when overindulging on junk food, the importance of eating healthy and how great green leafy vegetables are for you.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation and the American Academy of Pediatrics are joining together with We Give Books and The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle to send the message to families about teaching healthy eating habits in the home. They will be donating copies of The Very Hungry Caterpillar to over 17,500 pediatrician offices across the United States.

As part of Very Hungry Caterpillar Day on March 20th, they’d like to offer books to Food for My Family readers as well!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of my very most favorite books for children. Both of my kids loved it. I would read it in English, Spanish, and I signed it too. We’d talk about the colors, the fruits, the veggies, and the sweets.

I used it all the time when I was teaching preschool and just recently used it when I was a substitute for 3 – 6 year old autistic children. We did a great art project with it and the kids all had fun. Their favorite parts were the POP! at the beginning and when the caterpillar becomes a BEAUTIFUL butterfly.

I have worked in child care for more then 25 years and have enjoyed every minute. Reading The very Hungry Caterpillar to children help them to understand why it is important to eat good foods.I have had a child say “veggies make you strong” or “oranges keep colds away” and the most funny one “milk does the body good” having books such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar helps children understand why it is important to eat healthy so they can grow up strong and healthy just like the caterpillar turning into a beautiful butter fly. Thank you Eric carle for giving me the opportunity to enjoy it.
