I’ve been getting ready to break down a few more topics in the Breaking Picky Eaters series here on Food for My Family. Later this week we’ll be looking at different kinds of “picky eaters” and the differences between them. What are the different reasons a child may present as picky?
Where we’ll go from there:
- What’s a supertaster? We’ll all be taking the test here. Are you a supertaster?
- We’ll hear from Janice Bissex, RD about picky eaters in teens.
- Common mistakes when dealing with a picky eater in your house. Have you become a shot-order cook? Are you constantly fighting over the same things?
- Changing your methods. We know what doesn’t work; now let’s look at new ideas to try with your kids. How can you promote healthy relationships with food?
- Let’s explore some out-of-the-box ideas to get kids involved and enjoying the food around them and making food fun.
- Resources from other places are always great as well, and I definitely don’t have all the answers. From books for the adults to books for kids and other websites, we’ll look for more sources of information on picky eating.
The goal of this series is to break the process of picky eating. It is intended to be positive. Oftentimes parents get worked up over the food struggles and behaviors that are associated with mealtime, and with a child who is already worked up over the food, the two clashing can make for dinnertime disaster.
This week I’m co-hosting a class on The Motherhood sponsored by ConAgra called “Expanding Your Family’s Palate by Placating Picky Eaters.” Hosted by Jennifer Leal of Savor the Thyme, Kimberly Coleman from Mom in the City and Kelsey Banfield, The Naptime Chef, the class will look at making meals work for everyone in the family – adults and kids alike – and strategies for getting picky eaters to try new things. Do you have a favorite meal that the whole family enjoys? Did you successfully survive a troubled eater and both live to tell about it? Share what worked and what didn’t.
Anyone can join in, and we’d love to have you there to ask questions, share recipes and give your own suggestions and tips on what’s worked for you! Register for the Cooking Connections “Placating Picky Eaters” class, and then join us Wednesday, March 2nd at 1 p.m. EST to get in on the discussion.
